Twin Cities Siding: Post-Winter Siding Inspection Tips

After that long bout with the winter season, most siding in Minneapolis MN may have sustained some damage and are most likely in need of some attention. We all know how harsh Minnesota’s winters can be—with subzero temperatures combined with wind and snow and some occasional sleet and hail, even the toughest material in the planet can easily be overcome.

There are a lot of problems homeowners will have to look out for in their siding after a long, grueling winter. There’s the possibility of water getting inside your home; this could easily lead to mold, holes, and/or leaks, which, in turn, will eventually speed up siding deterioration and failure, not to mention enable pests to get inside your house.

If you want to make sure that your siding is still in top condition, you can actually do the siding inspection yourself. Just follow this siding inspection guide so that you’ll know for yourself how your siding held up after that long winter season:

Visual Inspection. Start by visually inspecting your siding. Check every part—from the top to the bottom and all the way around your house. If you see any signs of rot and/or warping or a loose or cracked piece, then you have a problem.

Poke Test. Using a screwdriver, poke each part of your siding to know if the siding is soft; if it is, then it means that the insides of your siding is already moist and is starting to rot.

Paint Test. Check the paint: If it’s fading, cracking, or peeling, it only means that the siding needs to be replaced.

Moisture. As with any other parts of your home, if there are signs of water stains, mold, and/or mildew, this means that the siding has already failed and will need replacement.
