Common Siding Terminologies to Keep in Mind

As you plan out your siding replacement project, you might hear a few industry terms while discussing details with your siding contractor. Understanding what they mean can help you design a good home exterior with the right kind of siding and trim. It also gives you a clearer idea of what goes into the project since each component plays a crucial role in protecting your home from the elements.

Common Siding Terminologies To Keep In Mind

If you find some of the terms confusing, our team at Twin Cities Siding and Roofing has put together some of the most common ones below and what they mean:

Face

This refers to the side that’s visible when the contractors install the siding panel.

Backerboard

This is a flat material used when installing vinyl siding on your home’s face and is applied between the siding and the studs. It can also be applied over the wall surface to provide an even surface.

Batten

This is usually a strip of wood that seals joints in wooden siding. But when used in “board and batten” siding, it refers to the part between the boards that fill the gaps.

Buttlock

This is found at the bottom part on the edge of a siding panel. This is also an accessory piece that’s opposite the nailing slots that lock onto the preceding panel.

Furring/Furring Strip

This is used to even a surface when preparing it for siding installation. To “fur” a surface means to apply these strips.

Lap

Short for “overlap”, it simply means overlapping the ends of two siding panels or accessory pieces. This allows for expansion and contraction of the panels and is usually necessary depending on the material you choose.
