Off-Season Window Replacement: How Does It Work?

Window replacement is ideally done during the summer season. But if it can’t wait until then, don’t worry: with a few changes to the standard installation process, you can have your windows replaced in virtually any weather condition. Here’s how it’s done.

Keep an Eye on Weather Forecasts

Fall and early winter isn’t as busy as summer, which means you can book your window installation on a relatively short notice. Try to book in on a clear day, at least according to the weather forecast, and have the installer start mid-morning. This gives the materials time to warm up and expand. Installing windows before they have acclimatized may result in warping.

One of the advantages of working with a local siding and window replacement company is that the installers are familiar with the local weather and usually have the experience to know whether the weather is suited for installation. It’s important to understand that window performance depends on proper installation. This is why we at Twin Cities Siding and Roofing would rather postpone the installation than proceed in weather that would risk long-term window performance.

Whole-House or One-at-a-Time Window Removal?

Traditionally, window installers remove all the windows from the house before starting on the first replacement window. This process was already in use even before air conditioning was invented and is still done on new homes. However, doing the same process on an already-occupied home means you will have to turn the HVAC system off during installation. That’s all right during the mild fall season, but not so much when biting winter winds are starting to blow.

Fortunately, windows can be replaced one at a time. This method provides several benefits over the traditional replacement method. It lets you keep your HVAC system running, minimizes wasted energy and allows window replacement virtually any time of the year.
