Window Mullions vs. Muntins: The Difference

Window mullions and muntins – whenever you hear these words, it’s likely you aren’t certain what they are or what they have to do with your window. In fact, they’re on every window, and those who are aware of them often think of them as the same thing. Surprisingly enough, there are some key differences that separates a window mullion from muntins.

Window Mullions Vs Muntins

Muntins

While they’re commonly associated with windows, muntins can also be the vertical dividers of wood panels, furniture and even doors. They allow weight to be transmitted vertically, especially if a building’s outer walls cannot carry the weight of the large windows placed on them. For windows, muntins are the small vertical and horizontal bars that can change large pieces of glass into smaller and divided lites to prevent breakage. Another reason muntins are often added to windows is to add depth to resist any wind load that can cause the glass joints to further weaken.

Mullions

Unlike muntins, on the other hand, mullions are used exclusively for windows and doors. The main purpose of the mullions is to divide the window glass into smaller blocks so the individual window or door unit won’t appear too large. They also reduce damage during transport and installation.
