In most cases, the decks you are familiar with are raised platforms. However, there are factors that decide whether the deck should be built on the ground or if it should be elevated.
Ground-Level Decks
Ground decks, also known as unattached decks, are decks that are usually composed of a box frame topped by floorboards supported by joists. Ground-level decks can be placed on any surface in the yard. These are also the most common decks found in most American households.
A deck placed beside a house isn’t considered a platform as long as it isn’t attached. Municipalities won’t require you to get a permit or install a railing if a deck is built under 18 inches high. However, you should double-check the requirements or your local building department to confirm it. If you do need a railing, most municipalities only require a railing once the deck reaches at least 36 inches in height.
Raised Decks
In most cases, your home’s design will determine the height of your deck. For instance, a ranch-style house would have the living room located on the second floor, which would make it ideal for the deck to be slightly elevated to reach the living room entrance. A stairwell can be attached to it, which can then be divided with one or more platforms so that you can easily access your living room from the yard. It’s supported by sturdy posts anchored into the ground for stability and safety.
