4 Communication Strategies for You and Your Contractor

So you’ve made your choice from prospective siding contractors, signed all the paperwork, and set a start date for your siding project. Congratulations! The hardest parts are over, but it doesn’t mean that you should just go and leave everything to your siding contractor. Constant communication before and during your project is key to keeping your project on track.

Before your project begins, have a sit-down with your contractor and plan your communications strategy.

  1. Hold regular meetings – If the project is estimated to last for more than a few days, regularly-scheduled meetings should be conducted. It doesn’t have to be long meetings; half-hour meetings over coffee with the team leader should be enough for catching up with the project’s progress, expressing concerns, and asking questions. If you can’t be physically present at the time, a Skype or Facetime video call should be okay. If your project is expected to last a couple of days at the most, the next item in this list would be more appropriate.

  2. Keep daily updates – Try to connect with the contractor every day, if only to get you up to date with your project’s progress. Unless you’re not holding regular meetings or it’s not urgent, keep the daily updates concise. Reliable siding contractors keep a log of the day’s accomplishments on a logbook, an on-site dry-erase board, or an online shared document.

  3. Agree on call times – Make sure you exchange phone numbers with the contractor, and if you can only be reached at work during certain times, inform your contractor about it. In addition to phone numbers, exchange Skype usernames or email addresses, both of which could be useful if either of you needs to send documents, photos, or sketches.

  4. Have digital copies of pertinent documents – Today’s smartphones and tablets can store a considerable amount of documents on the device itself or on a free cloud-based account. While not an absolute necessity, having a copy of your documents on-hand for your perusal at any time can be incredibly convenient.
