You may not think about some of your roof components that much – save for your shingles – but you should know that the underlayment plays an integral role in protecting your home against the elements. “What is it anyway?”, you might ask. Here’s what you need to know about the underlayment.

Understanding How Your Roof Underlayment Protects Your Home

How Roofing Underlayment Works

The underlayment is a protective layer of material installed on the deck surface, but concealed by the outer roof covering (i.e. your asphalt shingles). It serves as an additional barrier to prevent natural elements, such as water and hail, from penetrating the inner roofing structure. They’re usually weather-resistant to ensure leaks won’t get through even during torrential rain and thunderstorms.

Roof underlayment also keeps unwanted debris from puncturing the roof and compromising its performance. When addressing roof damage after a storm, it can serve as a temporary cover to protect it from the weather and mitigate further damage. It essentially protects your home during the renovation process until your roof is fully replaced!

Popular Underlayment Types

There are a variety of underlayment types, but the following are the most common:

  • Non-bitumen synthetic: This commonly used underlayment has good water resistance qualities and is designed to be fully applied on the roof deck. It’s a cost-effective material recommended by many contractors since it can be easily installed during emergency repairs and major roof renovations.
  • Rubberized asphalt: While this material is slightly more expensive than other materials, it also has better weather resistance. It’s waterproof on one side while adhesive on the other. The adhesive side comes with a peel-off membrane for easy application. When applied properly, the rubber-like properties that come with the material provide a waterproof seal.
  • Asphalt-saturated felt: If you’re not into synthetic underlayment, this material may be your best option. It’s widely popular for its reliable water resistance and flexibility. It can also be readily used for any emergency roof repair or replacement.

A well-built roofing system consists of several components that work together to protect your home and boost its curb appeal. Should you ever need roof repairs or a full replacement, there’s only one name you can count on in the area. Call Twin Cities Siding and Roofing at (651) 967-0873 to request a quote!
