To replace or not to replace: that is the question. Siding replacement is typically scheduled when you’re looking at extensive cladding damage, or you want to update your home’s appearance. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to make the decision to replace their siding right away. Doubly unfortunate, however, is that postponing siding replacement can lead to more problems down the line, including those that could affect other parts of your home.
Among the consequences of failing to replace damaged siding is further damage and deterioration. You see, most siding types are designed in such a way that the panels are placed on top of another, locking together. If a panel is missing or is no longer able to support the others above it, chances are it will fail, leading to the rest of the siding installation to fall apart.
Other possible risks that come with postponing siding replacement include:
Water Damage
When your siding or a portion of it is damaged or missing, water can penetrate through the gaps and seep into your walls. When this happens, water not only begins to wreak havoc on other siding components, but other parts of your home as well, such as the interior walls. Overlapping siding panels are designed that way to prevent water from seeping through, not remain inside them.
Decreased Property Value
Even when you’re not looking to sell, your property’s value is important. If you let damage accumulate, your home starts looking rundown, worn-out and not at all attractive. Additionally, damage affects your home’s function as well. With your property’s form and function down, your home’s value will take a dip as well. Should you decide to sell down the line, you’d have a hard time finding a buyer unless you get your home back into shape. After all, no one likes the trouble of fixing a problem.
Unattractive Exteriors
Dilapidated siding could make your home look unkempt. It can also say a ton about you, from your personal taste to economic status. Needless to say, first impressions last, so you need to make it count.
