The best part of today’s siding replacement is that with so many styles to choose from, there’s no limit to how you want your exterior to look. We understand how the names of different styles can be confusing, especially if it’s your first time doing siding installation. So, we’d like to give you an overview of today’s siding styles.
-
Clapboard – Clapboard style, often referred to as the traditional siding style, is perhaps the most common style available. The original design is simple: the horizontal planks overlap one another at an angle, which helps shed rainwater. Nearly every siding product is offered in this style, a fine example of which is James Hardie® HardiePlank® lap siding.
-
Dutch Lap – The Dutch Lap style is similar to clapboards with its horizontal orientation, except that the overlapping sections are notched, creating a flatter exterior wall. The notches are spaced in such a way that it creates a nice shadow profile instead of a completely flat exterior.
-
Vertical Siding – Lap siding can also be installed in a vertical orientation, with the option to add shadow lines or to keep it seamless. It can also be used to emphasize areas like corners or your front facade. Vertical siding is built differently to ensure proper exterior protection. This is why James Hardie siding is also available in a separate vertical siding option. Vertical siding adds a contemporary feel to an otherwise traditional house design and adds visual height to any structure.
-
Board-and-Batten – Board-and-batten siding is the kind of siding that features alternating wide boards and narrow strips called battens. While the common orientation is vertical, you can also choose to have it installed horizontally. The boards are usually about a foot wide while the battens about half an inch; the latter acts as a seal over the seams that helps improve weatherproofing and energy efficiency.
-
Specialty Siding – This category includes options like wood-shake siding as well as fish-scale siding. Specialty siding is more detailed and typically takes longer to install than board siding. You can use this style in combination with the aforementioned styles, or use it as the main siding material.
