Fiber cement siding requires minimal maintenance to keep it in good condition for many years. However, minimal maintenance doesn’t mean that it needs no maintenance at all. You will need to perform a few small tasks occasionally to prevent problems. Twin Cities Siding and Roofing, an experienced siding company, explains more:
Regularly Clean Your Siding
Cleaning your siding doesn’t just preserve its appearance. It also prevents mold and mildew growth. Mold and mildew are unsightly, and they can degrade the paint on your siding. To prevent problems, read your manufacturer’s recommendations first before cleaning your siding. Some types of siding can be damaged by pressure washers. Instead, you will need to use a low-pressure spray, a soft-bristled brush and mild soap and water.
Inspect the Caulk
The fiber cement in your siding is moisture-resistant. However, other parts of the siding can be affected by leaks, mold and condensation. A siding contractor usually uses a waterproof sealant like silicone caulk to join the siding to the rest of your home. Inspect this caulk every year for any gaps or cracks. Water can enter through these gaps and damage the wall behind your siding. Fortunately, these gaps are easily fixed with caulk. For best results, ask a professional to inspect and fix your siding.
Keep Your Gutter System in Good Shape
Your gutters and downspouts protect your siding and the rest of your home from water damage. They should be in good condition so that rainwater gets diverted away from your home. You should clean your gutters at least twice a year to stop leaves and debris from forming gutter clogs. You should also perform a visual inspection on your gutters occasionally. If you see peeling, flaking or rust, then you need to call a professional to deal with the issue.
