Maximizing Curb Appeal: Choosing the Right Siding – Part I: Deciding on the Color

With so many colors to choose from, it can get difficult to pick out what to use for your home’s siding. And since it’s not practical to change siding colors frequently, you’re going to want to make the most out of the choice you’ll be making. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. Here are a few things you can take into consideration when picking out a siding color:

Look Around Your Neighborhood

You need a place to start and there’s nothing better than your own neighborhood to help you drum up ideas for siding color. It’s typical for a neighborhood to follow a certain scheme but that doesn’t always mean that you have to use the same colors that the neighboring houses have. Choosing a color in the same general shade as other houses around you, however, will ensure that your home doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. If you want to stand out (without ruffling a few feathers), choose a siding color that complements others in your street. Just because it’s not bright and loud doesn’t mean it can’t be eye-catching.

Look at Your Home

Architectural styles can offer cues to siding color. Take a Colonial-style home, for instance; it will work best with siding in a single color. Don’t let this limit you, however. Instead, let your home’s architectural style give you a starting point, making it easier for you to narrow down your options and choose the right siding color for your property.

Another thing that could guide your selection is the immediate area around your home. Think landscaping and other geographical features. If you have a contemporary-styled garden, for instance, it would look best accompanied by siding in more subdued colors.

Don’t forget your roof! Your siding and your roof will be working together as your home’s exterior so they should complement each other. Generally, a dark-colored roof pairs well with light-colored siding; a roof in a more neutral color will give you more leeway with siding color.

Color is not all there is to siding as design plays an important role in how it looks too. Head on over to Part II to learn more.
