Siding comes in a wide variety of colors, which can be a double-edged sword: it offers great flexibility with the color selection, but choosing the right colors can be overwhelming. Today, we share tips on how to choose the right color for your siding.
1. Walk around the neighborhood. Some neighborhoods have a certain range of colors, even without the influence of a homeowners association (HOA). It goes without saying that you want your home to stand out – but not like a sore thumb. Take a walk, bike or drive around a few blocks down from your home, paying attention to your neighbors’ color palettes. You’re not expected to make your choice by the time you get back, but you should at least have an idea which colors you should not choose.
2. Be familiar with your home’s architectural style. Traditional architectural styles often have a set color palette, which means certain colors could look inauthentic if your home is based on a certain style. Take the time to research your home’s architectural style, particularly its unique design traits. Your local siding repair and installation contractor may also know such color palettes and make recommendations.
3. Check if your home has permanent components. Unless you’re planning on painting over permanent components like stone and exposed brick, you need to take them into consideration when choosing your siding color. Their natural colors can help you narrow down your color selection.
4. Don’t forget your roof color. If your roof isn’t due for replacement soon, then it will also play an important role in your siding color selection. After all, it takes up about half of your home’s exterior. In addition to choosing a siding color (or colors), consider siding textures and profiles that would be a better match for your roof.
