How to Decorate for Halloween Without Damaging the Siding

How to Decorate for Halloween Without Damaging the Siding

Apart from giving the kids (and kids at heart) reasons to dress up, one of the best things about Halloween is the decor. Jack-o’-lanterns, witch hats, plastic skeletons—the scarier, the better. However, some homeowners dread this holiday because they fear it might damage the siding. Your trusted siding contractor Twin Cities Siding & Roofing shares some tips on how to hang Halloween decorations without scratching your siding.

How To Decorate For Halloween Without Damaging The Siding

Vinyl Siding Clips

If your home is equipped with traditional lap siding, you can buy vinyl siding clips from the nearest hardware store. Vinyl siding clips are flat strips of aluminum bent into a soft “J” shape, with a small crook at the top. The crook is designed to be wiggled into the gaps between the siding boards, and should be able to hold light items such as papier-mâché heads.

While designed for vinyl siding, these clips can also be used on lap siding made from other materials, like fiber cement siding. Siding contractors like us would caution on using force to install or remove them, as the paint or factory-applied finish may get damaged. You can also use vinyl siding clips for other, year-round purposes such as hanging planters.

Brick Clips

If your home has brick exteriors, you can buy brass or bronze brick clips. These decorative clips blend in well with brick, and can be installed without drilling or even scratching your home’s brickwork. Brick clips have a tensioned strip at the bottom and a hook shape at the top, which ensure a tight fit. They can carry a lot more weight, which makes them perfect for more elaborate Halloween decor.

Double-Sided Tape

If you’re thinking those hard-to-remove pieces of mounting tape, it’s only one of many types of double-sided tape. Manufacturers such as 3M sell easy-remove double-sided tape that can be removed cleanly using a hair dryer. A word of caution: you may want to avoid using double-sided tape on painted surfaces, as it will likely get damaged. But if your siding is up for repainting after Halloween anyway, just go wild and have fun with the decor.
